Introduction

The objective of the Active Investor Plus visa category is to increase the flow of foreign capital and attract skilled and experienced active investors into areas that align with Government’s economic strategy, by providing resident visas to those who wish to participate in New Zealand’s investment ecosystem and make a significant contribution to New Zealand’s economy.

Active Investor Plus Settings can be categorised as follows, from 1 April 2025:

While previously, the requirements for these visas have been restrictive, from 1 April 2025 the New Zealand Government is making it easier to invest into New Zealand, to obtain permanent residency through the Active Investor Plus Visa (AIP).

Investments can be broken down by two categories, Growth or Balanced, each with a different threshold.

Growth


Minimum investment:
$5m NZD

Investment options:
Managed funds and direct investments (not bonds or property) – NZTE determines what is acceptable

Investment length:
3 years

Day count requirement:
21 days total

Time to invest:
6 months within AIP, but can extend by 6 months upon request

English:
Not required

Balanced


Minimum investment:

$10m NZD

Investment options:
Bonds (government, local government, corporate), listed entities, donations, property development (residential, commercial, industrial) – INZ determines what is acceptable. Applicants under the Balanced Category may also invest in Growth Category investments, being: 

  • Managed funds
  • Direct investments

Investment length:
5 years

Day count requirement:
105 days total – for each $1m extra invested, reduce day count by 14 days

Time to invest:
6 months within AIP, but can extend by 6 months upon request

English:
Not required
